IELTS Exam, Writing Task 2, Evening Slot, 28 November 2020, INDIA 

Q. Some people think that they have right to use as much freshwater as they want. Others believe that the government should strictly control the use of fresh water as it is a limited resource. Discuss both ideas and give your opinion. Discuss both views and give your personal opinion.

Some people use water recklessly accessible to humanity. On the other hand, some believe that freshwater is an extremely limited resource that must be used in a controlled manner and the government must take the necessary steps to conserve water resources for the future.

To commence with, reckless use of water can be easily traced, for example, in many countries around the world. A large amount of freshwater used for washing household items, vehicles, bathing, etcetera, reflecting a lack of awareness of the diminishing amount of available water resources. We live in a time when the availability of freshwater is like an extremely rare rock that is almost impossible to find.

Fortunately, I believe that the government should control the water source. The first and foremost reason is the shortage of water in the near future. Obviously, population growth is increasing the demand for water. If residents have free access to water, they may not see the need to conserve water. As a result, water shortages are inevitable.

Moreover, it will prevent private companies from privatizing water supplies. Because there are many companies that focus on managing water resources for profit, they tend to supply residents with poor quality water or contaminated water with chemicals that can lead to fatal outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases such as eye irritation and diarrhea.

To sum up, while there is a heated debate going on and against the use of freshwater, I argue that all major cities should have adequate water systems to provide the population with fresh water. Policies of fair use must be implemented by governments and supported by the people to save humanity and the planet.
