Q.  Nowadays children spend more time playing computer games than playing sports. Why is this happening? Does this have a positive or negative impact on their development?(05-12-2020)

Physical activity plays an important role in the physical and psychological development of children in the early years of their life. However, urbanization and modernization have replaced outdoor games with indoor games and thus increased the number of obese among the current generation. In my opinion, this is a negative phenomenon that affects the physical and mental development of children.

Firstly, urbanization has removed public playgrounds from cities. With the development of all these residential complexes and shopping centers, cities are more congested than ever, leaving no room for small outdoor games like cricket or soccer. Since practicing such sports on narrow streets bothers residents of apartments, parents are forced to keep their children at home.

The safety of children has also become a cause for concern. Parents warn children to go outside to play. So, to keep them busy at home, they supply their children with video games, computers, and smartphones. As a result, children no longer enjoy the benefits of outdoor play. This, unfortunately, affects their physical and intellectual development. Sitting in front of a computer or game console for long periods of time can affect children's eyesight and make them obese.

Research has shown that physical activity contributes to the development of cognitive abilities such as decision making and problem-solving. Sports and play also teach children vital skills such as team spirit and the ability to perceive both success and failure. When children are not involved in sports, they lose the opportunity to learn these life lessons.

In conclusion, video games can keep teenagers engaged for hours on end, but they do not help children's overall development. Therefore, I firmly believe that too much time on computer games can be very harmful to the younger generation.
