IELTS Writing Task 2: Overview
IELTS writing task 2 essay is included in both general training and academic IELTS. You will have 40 minutes to write a 250-word answer to your essay question. Your essay should include four paragraphs (introduction, two main paragraphs, and a conclusion).
While there is a consistent essay formula to help you structure your essays and paragraphs, you need to be aware of the different types of essay questions. The way you use the formula depends on the type of question.

How to structure your IELTS Essay Writing Task 2 is an important skill that can make the difference between getting and not getting the group score you deserve. With this in mind, we've highlighted the most common IELTS Writing Task 2 structures below.
Almost all of my IELTS Writing Task 2 essays follow this basic structure:-I will also provide some simple frameworks for each of these question types. It is important that your essay has a clear paragraph structure, as this will help you organize your ideas better and means you will write a more coherent essay. I usually suggest a FOUR Paragraph structure:
INTRODUCTION
MAIN BODY PARAGRAPH 1
MAIN BODY PARAGRAPH 2
CONCLUSION
FOUR Paragraph structure is a good idea because you often need to discuss two things in an IELTS essay. For example, two different views, or the advantages & disadvantages. So, if you only have two main paragraphs, you can write about one of these parts in main paragraph 1 and the other part in main paragraph 2. This means that you are more likely to discuss the two parts in about the same way, and you need do this to get Band 7 or 8 for Task response..
The sentences you insert in each paragraph will depend on what type of question you receive.
The FIVE most common IELTS Writing Task 2 question types are:
- Positive or Negative development
- Opinion (agree or disagree)
- Advantages and disadvantages
- Problem and solution
- Discussion (discussion of both views and give your opinion)
