Q. More and more people are shifting to cities from countryside. Do this have advantages or disadvantages on environment?

As the world's population continues to grow, the pressure on its resources increases. People moving from rural to urban areas can have an impact on the environment. Nowadays, many cities face the problem of overcrowding due to the immigration of people from the countryside. Living in the city and in the countryside has its advantages and disadvantages.

First of all, the younger generation is moving to urban areas in search of better education and job opportunities that they cannot find in rural areas. The cities have good universities that will give them better education and better career prospects. In addition, many jobs are available in cities. This is the main reason why young people prefer cities over villages. We are growing demographically, and we are also growing in terms of space usage. Think of all these roads and ports that are built and are destroying landscapes, forests, cutting them into small pieces. This is an important point. While people can move from rural to urban areas, it also happens that cities can include the surrounding countryside as they grow in size, consuming land and resources in the process.

On the other hand, the idea of moving to a big city or town represented an attractive proposition to many. In 2020, the United Nation declared that 55% of the world's population lives in "urban areas" and predicted that this figure will rise to 68% by mid-century. It may not seem immediately obvious, but people leaving rural areas and moving to cities can have quite a significant impact on the natural world. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has previously stated that “traditional indigenous territories” are home to 82% of the planet's biodiversity. So, when we lose these people who live in the countryside, in the mountains and in the forests of the Amazon, when they "migrate" to the city, we lose the biodiversity that accompanies this system, and this is one of the explanations for why biodiversity actually decreasing so strongly.

In conclusion, in developing countries, about a third of urban dwellers live in impoverished slums and squatter settlements. Slums are densely populated urban areas with substandard housing and very poor living conditions, which creates a number of problems. As the world's population continues to grow and the pressure on its resources increases, all of the issues mentioned above will become topics of significant importance.
