Recent IELTS Exam, Writing Task 2, Morning Slot, 27 March 2021, INDIA

Q. When employers choose the best person for a job they should consider personal qualities, rather than qualifications and experience. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

According to some people, in the recruiting process, a recruiter should pay attention to the personal qualities of applicants, and not to their experience and qualifications. I disagree with this view because a qualified candidate has the right set of skills and understanding that an unqualified person might lack despite being friendly. Secondly, an experienced person can bring new technological advances and has a lot to offer the organization. I will support my point in the following paragraphs.

First of all, a highly skilled person has the right set of skills and knowledge to get a job. Since this is a world of specialization, recruiters prefer to find / assign someone with multiple skills rather than interpersonal qualities. For example, corporations tend to only hire people who have a degree in a particular field because they believe that person can do a better job than a less skilled person.

Moreover, some recruiters believe that an experienced candidate can bring new technological advancements to an organization. All the methodologies and processes that an experienced employee brings with him help the firm improve its current business process for more profit. For example, startups prefer to hire people familiar with their competitors' business models. Admittedly, people with good temperaments are good at communicating with customers. Personally, I believe that personal qualities are critical only in positions that require a lot of public interaction. For the back-end, work experience and academic qualifications are more important.

To conclude, it is clear that the degree holder has the requisite set of skills and know-how to better fulfill their responsibilities. Moreover, a seasoned champion may come up with a new formula for maximizing the company's profits. Friendly personality traits are definitely helpful; however, they never replace academic qualifications or work experience.
