Q. The charts below show the United States spending patterns between 1966 and 1996.  To summarize the information by selecting and reporting key characteristics and comparing where appropriate.

The pie charts show a breakdown of American spending between 1966 and 1996 into seven different categories.

Food and cars were the two largest expenditures in both years. Together, they accounted for more than half of household expenditures. In 1966, food accounted for 44% of spending, but in 1996 it fell by two-thirds to 14%. However, spending on automobiles doubled, from 23% in 1966 to 45% in 1996.

Other areas changed significantly. The cost of eating out has doubled, from 7% to 14%. The share of wages spent on computers rose sharply from 1% in 1966 to 10% in 1996. However, as computer spending increased, the percentage of spending on books fell from 6% to 1%. Some areas have remained relatively unchanged. Americans spent roughly the same amount on petrol and furniture in both years.

Overall, the increase in spending on cars, computers and eating out has been offset by declining spending on food and books.
