Q. The tendency of people to imitate each other is evident in the popularity of fashionable clothes and consumer goods. To what extent do you agree?

Nowadays, almost everyone follows the latest fashion trends. For example, we need the latest gadgets that our friends are already using. Our clothing choices are influenced by what celebrities wear. This is a clear sign that people enjoy imitating others.

To inaugurate with, we copy because we want to match. We don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. For instance, no one, not even those who wear casual clothes all the time, will wear a T-shirt and jeans at a party where the dress code is formal. This is because we desperately need to be accepted. We don't want others to scoff at our clothing style or other choices. We want to be perceived as fashionable, stylish and trendy.

The tendency to follow fashion trends stems from the basic insecurities of the individual. We are concerned that if we don’t do what others do, or don’t wear what others do, we may become less acceptable. We follow celebrities because they already have millions of fans. As a result, there will be many takers of whatever they support. It is also a way to certify that what we are buying is a popular product. Nobody wants to spend money on something that no one else wants to buy.

Being trendy is also a great way to make sure a product is good or bad, not just spending money on it. In a sense, this justifies the purchase. So if everyone has the latest iPhone, that's a great reason for us to get one too. Worse yet, not having it can be a sign that we cannot afford it.

In conclusion, humans are social animals who crave appreciation and recognition. The easiest way to do this is to do what others are doing. Following fashion trends is simply an expression of fitting into this basic human urge.
