Q. Some businesses find that their new employees lack basic interpersonal skills such as cooperative skills. What are the reasons and suggest some possible solutions?

These days many employees lack interpersonal qualities like communication skills and team spirit. This is due to the inadequacy of the education system and recruitment procedures. To address this issue, changes in educational policy and methods of teaching and assessing students are needed.

To inaugurate with, the fact that the key reason for the lack of soft skills among new employees is the inefficiency of the education system. This is due to the fact that the secondary and higher levels of education are mainly focused on teaching theoretical subjects, and no attention is paid to extracurricular activities. Secondly, many employers only hire workers based on their academic grades. Thus, the desire to get maximum grades forces students to focus only on studying books. As a result, most students lack the ability to work with team members and deal with workplace pressures.

To combat this problem, the education system needs to be amended to include interpersonal skills in the curriculum. To clarify, additional points should be given for participation in sports, painting, dancing and acting. This will encourage students to participate in these activities. As a result, students will become more self-confident, diligent and cooperative team members. In addition, the hiring process should include group discussions and other tests to measure interpersonal skills in order to select versatile candidates. For example, Infosys Consultancy Services only selects employees after testing their interpersonal skills, even if the candidate ranks first in academia. This ultimately motivates students to work on their interpersonal skills.

To conclude, ineffective educational structure and inept employee selection criteria are the reasons behind the lack of interpersonal skills among employees. The only solution to this problem is to learn extracurricular activities and make them an integral part of the selection process.
