Q. Many people believe that countries should produce food for the whole population and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is commonly suggested that the food grown by nations should meet the needs of all their citizens and that imports should be curbed as much as possible. I completely agree with this approach as it will help countries to save money and create many opportunities for the residents.

One of the biggest advantages of producing food at home is that it can benefit governments economically. Becoming self-sufficient in food production and minimizing imports makes a country less dependent on others and at the same time benefits local producers. It will also give an advantage in trade decisions with other countries. Moreover, domestically grown food will have lower base prices as it becomes a regular staple in people's diets. For instance, 30 years ago, India was completely dependent on foreign countries for wheat, and then wheat prices were high. However, the country now produces enough wheat for its people and prices have dropped by 50%. Thus, domestic production of food items benefits the national economy.

Additionally, the idea of growing food to meet the country's demand would create many opportunities for the development of their people. This will create more jobs in this sector and motivate researchers to develop new technology. For example, the state of Punjab has created 30% more jobs for its residents since becoming the country's leader in wheat production. In addition, the state government was able to allocate more resources to research and development, making wheat more accessible to Indians.

To conclude, the idea of growing food that can meet the needs of the country and reducing imports is fully justified. This will not only make the country financially strong, but will also create more employment opportunities and enhance its technological potential in the long run.
