Q. In many countries companies hire more men than women for certain positions. Some people believe that employers should be required to recruit equal number of men and women in every field. What is your opinion?
In many parts of the world, certain professions are dominated by men, while others employ significantly more women. Some people argue that governments should force companies to hire equal numbers of males and females in every occupation. Although this policy may appear fair at first glance, I believe that mandatory gender quotas are not the best solution. Instead, employers should focus on equal opportunities and fair recruitment based on merit.On the one hand, supporters of equal recruitment believe that it can reduce discrimination and promote gender equality. In some industries, such as engineering or construction, women are often underrepresented because of traditional stereotypes rather than lack of ability. Requiring companies to employ equal numbers of men and women could encourage businesses to reconsider biased hiring practices and create a more balanced workforce. Furthermore, gender diversity can improve workplace performance, as people from different backgrounds often contribute different perspectives and ideas.
However, enforcing equal numbers in every field may create several problems. First, not all professions attract the same level of interest from both genders. For example, nursing and primary education tend to attract more women, whereas men are generally more interested in jobs involving physical labour or technology. As a result, forcing companies to meet strict quotas could lead to employers hiring candidates based on gender instead of qualifications or experience. This may reduce efficiency and even create resentment among employees who feel recruitment decisions are unfair. In addition, some jobs require specific physical abilities or involve difficult working conditions that naturally attract more men than women, or vice versa. It would therefore be unrealistic to expect perfect gender balance in every occupation. A more effective approach would be to ensure that recruitment processes are transparent and unbiased, while also encouraging both genders to pursue careers in non-traditional fields through education and training programs.
In conclusion, although equal recruitment policies may help tackle discrimination, I do not believe companies should be forced to hire the same number of men and women in every profession. The most important principle should be equal opportunity, where individuals are selected according to their skills, suitability, and performance rather than their gender.
