Evening Slot - Writing Task 2
Q. In the past, people have traveled abroad to see the many differences from their country. Nowadays, landscapes around the world are becoming more and more similar. What are the reasons for the similarities? Do you think the benefits of this equality outweigh the disadvantages?
Traveling is a common way to help people learn more about the world. However, there is no doubt that globalization is making the world more and more identical. Without going aboard, we can live the same life as people from other places. In my opinion, cultural globalization also brings us cultural assimilation, although we cannot prevent this trend of similarity, something that related to local culture and history inside cannot be replaced.
First of all, with the help of globalization, people can get to know the diversity of cultures much more easily than before. We can browse the website, watch movies, and read books to cut down on the time spent traveling. It really helps to broaden our horizons and prevent the "culture shock" that happened very often in the old days due to less developed transportation and communication.
As a result of massive urban sprawl, our city becomes overcrowded due to limited space. We may find that all the central areas of the world are built up with all kinds of skyscrapers, the same cafes, shops, and restaurants. This is very similar to when people traveled to the financial centers of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai. Travelers can sink, losing their curiosity, and tired of looking at the same landscapes all the time.
On the other hand, I don't think all these similarities are of any use to us. When everything becomes alike, at the same time cultural diversity will be destroyed. Landscapes not only signify how they look but also contain local culture and history. The fact that some minority cultures may shift, even end up on the brink of extinction, as we develop our modern cities, has a negative impact.
In conclusion, the similarity is an inevitable result of modernization and cultural globalization. It really brings people closer together, it is a potential threat to our local culture. Therefore, it is proposed to consider the balance between the development of the city and the preservation of culture.
