IELTS Exam, Writing Task 2, Evening Slot, 7 November 2020, INDIA

Q. Mobile phones and the internet are very useful. However, it is rare for older people to use them. What can mobile phones and the Internet be useful for older people? How are older people encouraged using this new technology?

It is irrefutable that the younger generation today are technophiles and very good at mobile phones and the Internet, while older people are worried about the latest technological devices. This essay will focus on how the mobile phone and the Internet can be useful for older people and how to encourage them to use such technologies.

Mobile phones and the Internet can be useful for older people in different ways. To begin with, we all know that social exclusion is a major problem older people face. Nuclear families dominate today, and even in nuclear families, children are forced to leave their parents in search of greener pastures abroad. With the help of these technologies, older people can communicate with their relatives and friends who live far away from them. For example, over the Internet, they can communicate with their grandchildren, as well as see them through a webcam.

Moreover, seniors citizens have many health problems. By mobile phone, they can call an ambulance or relatives at any time and receive timely medical assistance. Through the Internet, they can consult any doctor in any part of the world by showing their digital X-ray or MRI. Another advantage of this technology for seniors is that they can be entertained with these devices. They have a lot of free time, and they can listen to religious hymns, visit sacred and holy places online, which they otherwise cannot visit due to poor health. They can also do internet banking, shop online, and book rail and airline tickets online.

There are many ways to motivate senior citizen to use these types of equipment. First, they can learn how such things can help them. Government and nongovernmental organizations can set up free training centers to evaluate performance with this technology. Grandchildren can teach their grandparents to use these gadgets. Too many features in mobile phones are deterring older people from using them. So it was possible to make comfortable models especially for them. Finally, these devices can be made available to elderly at subsidized prices.

To conclude, we must actively guide older people to use mobile phones and the Internet in the years to come.
