Q. Some people believe that the government should provide free housing to the under-privileged and people who cannot afford to buy a home. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

The world economy may have developed significantly over the past few decades; however, millions of people are still homeless. This problem is especially acute in developing and undeveloped nations. Some people argue that the government should take care of this situation by providing free housing to the poor. This requirement certainly sounds logical; however, I don't think this is the best solution.

To commence with, the state cannot provide free housing to all the poor. Any such attempt would put too much pressure on the treasury. The government already has many other things to take care of. For example, in India, the government provides free education and free medical care in public schools and hospitals. Many public colleges and universities even provide higher education for free. There are also several government programs for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers in urban areas. In tribal areas, the government also provides free housing to the homeless citizens.
 
At the same time, providing free housing to all the poor in the country is not possible. The best solution is to make homes more accessible. If houses are not available, it is because of exorbitant land prices. The government can reduce the value of homes by allocating government land at preferential rates and by eliminating taxes on homes built on that land. Low-cost housing projects can be launched across the country. These homes should only provide basic amenities to make them more affordable.
 
People work hard to buy a home so that their loved ones can live securely. This is the main reason why basic requirements such as the education of children are ignored by people living below the poverty line. As a result, it interferes with the overall development of the nation. Children from low-income families are forced to work at an early age so that their income can help create a roof for the family. For example, in developing countries like Bangladesh, more than 50% of people are homeless and their focus is on owning a home, endangering the education and health of their descendants.
 
In conclusion, while I do not think the government should provide free housing to all homeless people in the country, I support the government's launching of low-cost housing projects. The government should also consider providing free land to the landless. These initiatives will certainly make homes more accessible and address the problems of the poor to a large extent.
