Q. Doctors recommend that older people should get regular exercise. However, many older people do not exercise enough. What could be the reasons for this? What can be done to encourage them to exercise?

Many elderly people today, despite the advice of doctors, do not receive adequate exercise. I believe this has a lot to do with their upbringing and simple psychology, and the best solutions complement existing drugs.

The main sources of this problem are historical and psychological. Many seniors today grew up in a period when exercise was not common. Gyms in schools and in the private sector are very recent, so they have not become ingrained habits for generations past. What's more, men may have experience in sports, but women's athletics has historically been underfunded and even banned in many countries, especially affecting older women. This story is intertwined with normal human psychology. People are naturally embarrassed to stand out in public or seem stupid. Feelings of awkwardness are an initial barrier that prevents many older people from pursuing a new sport or going to the gym for the first time.

The most effective solutions include improving the living conditions of older people. One way to do this is to build more training parks. Several East Asian countries, such as Vietnam and South Korea, have built both small and large, rural and urban parks with basic simulators for decades. They are easy to use, common, and older people are used to them. If this successful policy were expanded and replicated, many older adults would exercise. Another related decision is to build more fitness centers. This may not have much of an impact at this point because gym members tend to be younger, but as the next generation of seniors grows, these centers will become more crucial and allow governments to take a proactive rather than reactive approach.

In conclusion, there are both historical and fundamental human reasons why older people do not exercise today. In my opinion, these solutions are not new, but will definitely lead to better health of older people.
