Q. Shopping is now one of the most popular forms of leisure activity in many nations for young adults. Why is this? It is a positive or negative development?

In our modern society, the tendency to spend free time on shopping has increased significantly, mainly among the youngsters. Personally, I believe that the negative aspects of this trend surpass positive points. In my opinion, media influence and accessibility are the main reasons behind this development. In this essay, I will critically examine the given topic and outline relevant examples to support my view.

To inaugurate with, nowadays, media has a significant influence on the younger generation. Today, most advertisements shown on television or on the Internet, are targeted to this particular age group. This encourages the tendency of shopping in one's leisure time. For instance, a recent study at Stanford University showed that in the past decade, both offline and online shopping increased significantly among people between the age group of 15 to 25, due to the increased media influence. These findings subsequently reflect the level of impact on youngsters.

Furthermore, due to the recent modernization in our mobile phone technology. Now it has become easier to access online e-commerce websites on your cell phone. This is another reason behind this movement. In addition to this, a report published by Oxford University Press showed that the number of mobile shopping apps has grown significantly over the past 5 years due to an increase in the number of cell phone users, especially among the younger generation.

To conclude, this is a topic that raises many questions in modern life. After carefully analyzing the subject, I am inclined to say that the harmful consequences of this change cannot be denied, and therefore it would be fruitful to search for possible solutions to this global problem.
