Useful Phrases For IELTS Speaking

(1) Actually..., but...

When you have no experience with the topic. For instance, you have to talk about your favorite novel. Let's say you don't read novel very often. You can commence your answer in this way:
E.g.  Actually, I don't read very often, but I can tell you about a book I read when i was a child.

(2) Anyway, ...

If you got a little side-tracked during your answer and you want return to the main topic. E.g.  Anyway, it was a fantastic holiday.                                                                      

(3) Apparently, ...

When you've heard an opinion but don't sure if it is true or not. The meaning is similar to 'people say'.
E.g.  I've never been to Paris. But apparently, it's a very romantic city.                
              

(4) First and foremost, ...

When you want to indicate the most important factor in a list of items.
E.g.  First and foremost, I want to go there for work.               

(5) First of all, ...

When you want to assign a primary point in the list of points.
E.g.  First of all, traveling by bus is more relaxing than traveling by train.                

(6) For a number of reasons

When you want to organize your reasons into a list of items.
E.g.  I prefer living in the city for a number of reasons.       

(7) Generally speaking,...

When you want to make a common statement.
E.g.  Generally speaking, it was an enjoyable holiday.               

(8) I can not think of anything else to say.

When you have nothing more to say and want the examiner to know that you have finished.           

(9) I'd say....

When you do not have a strong opinion of something.
E.g.  I don't know much about sport in my country. But I'd say soccer is quite popular.

When you want to begin your answer.

When you want to show that you are not personally interested in something.
E.g.  I'm not really a fan of this TV show, but it's really popular in my country.

When you don't have strong opinion on something.
E.g.  I'm afraid I don't know much about sport in my country. But I suppose soccer is quite popular.

When you want to provide a final reason to explain something.
E.g.  Lastly, I think living in a city is a bit more dangerous.

When you want to give an example to support your points. This is especially useful if you need to continue the conversation.
E.g.  My uncle gives great advice. Let me give you an example. When I tried to decide which university to study, he helped me a lot.

When you want to make a contrast.
E.g.  I would say that living in a city has a number of benefits. On the other hand, some people might say that are lots of drawbacks like heavy traffic and pollution.

When you want to give an additional reason.E.g.  The weather in my nation is usually very cold in winter, On top of that, it rains a lot.

When you have additional considerations.
E.g.  When I am on holiday I can relax and forget about my work. Plus, I can meet lots of interesting new folks.

When you want to give additional reason.
E.g.  The weather in my country is usually very cold in winter. What's more, it rains a lot.
