Q. Some companies sponsor sports and sports stars to promote themselves. Some people think that it's good, while other believe that there are disadvantages. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Sponsoring an athlete or sporting event is a way to make a brand and product popular and attract customers around the world. While this practice has tremendous advantages, it also has several disadvantages.

When companies sponsor sporting events or sports teams, organizers don't have to worry about funding. For instance, major events like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic Games have many sponsors. These companies incur high costs and play a huge role in the commercial success of the event. Sponsorship is also a great way for sports teams from poor countries to fund their campaigns. Without sponsorship, many of these countries will not be able to send their teams to international events such as the Olympic Games. Sponsorship also allows athletes to generate additional income. The prospect of winning brand deals is driving many young people to take up sports as a career.

However, when the wrong company associates itself with a major sporting event, it can discredit the event. For example, it is not uncommon for tobacco or alcohol companies to sponsor sporting events. Since the majority of the audience for such events are young people, this is the wrong signal for society. Athletes and teams also often recommend soft drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, although they are unhealthy. In addition, sponsorship can sometimes lead to unethical practices such as match-fixing. When big companies sponsor teams, they want their team to win at any cost, and to do so, they can even buy out players from the opposing team. This practice kills the very essence of the sport. Sometimes players hired by companies are caught doing things that do not match their image, in which case this also damages the reputation of the company. Sponsored money can also cause players to lose focus on the game.

In conclusion, when companies sponsor sporting events or teams, both win. Companies gain the brand awareness they need, and teams no longer need to worry about allocating funds. On the other hand, sometimes players recommend wrong products or companies hire players who do more harm to their brand than good.
