Q.
Many parents these days work in other nations, bringing their families with them. Do you think that the advantages of this development outweigh its disadvantages?
The attitude of today's society has allowed a large number of people to work and live abroad with their spouses and children. While this trend is beneficial, I would argue that its drawbacks are more significant.
To commence with, working and living abroad, especially in a developed country, requires higher education. The opportunity to receive a decent salary allows parents to pay for education in prestigious universities, thus ensuring a promising future for their offspring. For instance, it is clear that some third world countries are lagging behind in terms of basic human resources; consequently, they cannot provide adequate education to their inhabitants.
However, I believe that this development has many more drawbacks. The first negative factor is the brain drain due to the fact that after the end of the work contract, people are tempted to stay abroad, neglecting their homeland. To illustrates, in the 1990s, several Indian scientists were invited by the US government to conduct research for their nation, as a result of which some of them decided to stay and received American citizenship. In addition, starting a new life in an unfamiliar country can be psychologically detrimental to the breadwinner and family members, as they must adjust to a new language or culture while avoiding possible obstacles such as stress. France is a perfect example where its people highly value their mother tongue; accordingly, if beginners are not able to communicate in French, they may face some challenges.
