Q. More and more people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons for this? Do you think it is a positive or a negative development?

Purchasing products from well-known brands are becoming increasingly popular in today's era. Many people do this to look rich and leverage their social status. Although this trend is widespread, I think it is a negative development that raises the issue of consumerism which is problematic.

To commence with, the increasing social status, as well as the enrichment of one's horizons, has become a major factor for this particular trend. In fact, people who wear expensive clothes or drive a luxury car tend to get more attention from others as well as acknowledge them. For instance, a group of people who conducted a social experiment about this phenomenon found that wearing branded clothes and using luxurious things becomes the most concerts before meeting new people on the streets. In short, getting personal privileges has become the main concern for people to buy expensive things.

However, many people said that this habit is terrible, including me, because it leads people to compete to look better than others and attract as much attention as possible. As a result, many people end up buying unnecessary and less valuable items for themselves, and end up regretting it at the end of the day. To illustrate, my sister bought the new iPhone because most of her colleagues have, but she can't operate it properly and was upset when she bought it. In short, buying unnecessary products from well-known stores is a bad habit.

To sum up, the purchase of expensive brand name goods depends on personal preferences and circumstances. However, I think this is one of the worst habits of the current generation as it is problematic and useless.
