Q. Some people believe that certain old buildings should be preserved more than others. What types of old buildings should be preserved? Do you think the advantages of preserving old buildings outweigh the disadvantages?

Some people argue that not all old buildings deserve the same level of protection and that certain structures should be prioritised for preservation. I strongly agree with this view, as buildings with historical, cultural, or architectural significance play an irreplaceable role in society. Overall, the advantages of preserving such buildings clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

To begin with, old buildings that should be preserved are those with strong historical value. These include landmarks associated with important national events, influential figures, or key periods in a country’s development, such as ancient forts, colonial-era buildings, and heritage monuments. Preserving these structures allows future generations to understand their history more vividly than through textbooks alone. In addition, buildings with unique architectural designs or traditional construction techniques should be protected, as they reflect the craftsmanship and artistic identity of past eras that cannot easily be replicated today.Another category worthy of preservation includes buildings with cultural and social significance. Temples, churches, mosques, theatres, and community halls often serve as symbols of collective identity and continuity. These structures frequently act as centres for cultural activities and tourism, contributing not only to social cohesion but also to the local economy. Cities such as Rome or Kyoto demonstrate how preserved historic buildings can coexist with modern development while attracting millions of visitors each year.

Admittedly, preserving old buildings has certain disadvantages. Restoration and maintenance can be extremely costly, and some buildings may not meet modern safety or environmental standards. Additionally, protecting old structures can limit urban expansion in rapidly growing cities where land is scarce. However, these challenges can be addressed through careful planning, adaptive reuse, and government or private funding. For example, many historic buildings are successfully converted into museums, hotels, or public spaces without losing their original character.

In conclusion, only selected old buildings—particularly those with historical, cultural, or architectural importance—should be preserved rather than all ageing structures. Despite the financial and practical challenges involved, the long-term benefits of preservation, including cultural continuity, education, and economic gains through tourism, far outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, preserving significant old buildings is both a valuable and necessary investment in society’s future.
