Q. Some people believe that certain old buildings should be preserved more than others. What types of old buildings should be preserved? Do you think the advantages of preserving old buildings outweigh the disadvantages?

It is a fact that some governments these days retain many historic buildings. A group of people believe that protecting these old buildings should help protect history. I personally believe that the positives of this trend outweigh the negatives, and I will analyze both perspectives and summarize in the following paragraphs.

It is considered that the protection of some historic buildings is important because they have historical value. Many buildings have witnessed some special or tragic moments of a particular country, so they need to be preserved. For instance, the Cellular Jail, also known as Kālā Pānī ( 'Black Water'), was a British colonial prison in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. The British authorities in India had been using the Andaman Islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and formerly used as a prison to punish the rebellion. Now, it is maintained by the Government as a museum to commemorate the people who had sacrificed their life for the independence of India. Further, I reckon that history is not hindering the nation’s development or progress rather it is teaching a lesson and motivating the people. To illustrate, people can learn from mistakes, problems, issues, and difficulties which will move them a step forward and they won’t repeat those errors in the future.

On the other hand, there is a clear evidence that day by day so many buildings are turning into abandoned wastages in city areas which are causing harm to the environment of the places. Moreover, many people live in these old buildings and seriously risk their lives. In order to minimize the risk, building owners somehow start construction work to renovate these buildings. But such a temporary step can never be the perfect solution to the underlying problem. As there is a possibility that worn-out buildings may face a major collapse at any time without prior notice. Which can lead to a big accident.

To conclude, old buildings ought to be preserved as they are important for a nation’s cultural identity. The governments that adopt this long-term, the multifaceted view will reap the rewards of a more unified national citizenry.
