Q. Some companies sponsor sports to advertise themselves. Some people think it is good while others think there are disadvantages. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sponsoring an athlete or sporting event is a way to make a brand and product popular and attract customers around the world. While this practice has huge benefits, it also has several drawbacks.

When companies sponsor sports events or sports teams, the organizers don't have to worry about funding. For instance, major events like Football World Cup or Olympic Games have myriad sponsors. These companies incur large expenses and play a huge role in ensuring the commercial success of the event. Sponsorship is also a great way for sports teams from poor countries to fund their campaigns. Without sponsorship, many of these nations will not be able to send their teams to international events such as the Olympics. Sponsorship also allows athletes to earn additional income. The prospect of brand deals encourages many young people to take up sports as a career.

On the other hand, when the wrong company associates itself with a major sporting event, it can tarnish the reputation of the event. To illustrate, it is not uncommon for tobacco or liquor manufacturers to sponsor sporting events. Since young people make up the majority of the audience of such events, this sends a very wrong signal to society. Athletes and teams also often recommend soft drinks such as Pepsi and Thums Up, although they are not healthy. In addition, sponsorship can sometimes lead to unethical practices such as match-fixing. When big companies sponsor teams, they want their team to win at all costs, and to do this they can even buy players from the opposing team. This practice kills the very essence of the sport. Sometimes players hired by companies are caught doing things that are inappropriate to their image, in which case it also hurts the company's reputation. Sponsor money can also cause players to lose interest in the game.

In conclusion, when companies sponsor sports events or teams, both parties win. Companies get the brand awareness they need and teams no longer have to worry about raising funds. However, sometimes players advertise the wrong products, or companies hire players who do more harm than good to their brand.
