IELTS Exam, Writing Task 2, General Training, 23 January 2021, INDIA

Q. Nowadays people buy a lot of things, even if they don't really need them. Why do you think people buy unwanted things? Is this a positive or negative trend for the individual and society?

Nowadays, people are increasingly buying more and more products that they don't need. There are several reasons for this trend, which, in my opinion, have a negative impact on individuals and society.

To commence with, people have different reasons for buying things they don't need. First, many people are rich and want to show off their wealth in every way. As if they are competing with each other to prove who is richer and more successful. For example, in Sudan, many wealthy people buy things they would never use at exorbitant prices just because a friend or colleague bought them. It is also possible that they buy useless items due to not knowing how they are used. They buy it in the hope that they can find some use for it, and when they don't find it, it will remain unused in their closets.

Unfortunately, this habit negatively affects people and their community. Spending money on unnecessary things can lead people to debt and poverty. Moreover, such costs will lead to the accumulation of waste in landfills. This can be due to the fact that people are more likely to throw away what they need. For example, in 2016 it was reported that 25% of all waste in Saudi Arabia was new and not used at all.

To summarize, it is obvious that people buy useless things to showcase their wealth. Obviously, this trend negatively affects people and society.
