Q. Some schools start teaching foreign languages in primary school years. Do the advantages of teaching foreign languages to youngsters outweigh the disadvantages?

In this age of globalization, most schools encourage their students to master a foreign language, because this will open up many opportunities for them in the future. Some educators believe that children should be taught a new language at the elementary school level rather than at the secondary school level. In my opinion, the introduction of a foreign language at the beginning of the curriculum has more advantages than some manageable disadvantages.

To inaugurate with, the most compelling reason for starting language learning at early school age is that the language learning ability of children is quite high compared to adults. To explain this further, the young brain has an amazing ability to register and assimilate new facts and commands. This ability decreases rapidly with age. Moreover, hesitation in speaking, which is usually a serious obstacle to expressing a new language, is usually not seen in young people. For example, data from the International Institute of Languages in China showed that knowledge of a non-native language is achieved almost 5 years earlier when it is introduced in primary school rather than in secondary school.

In addition, learning a language requires regular practice and time to develop fluency. Thus, an early start gives users enough time to master the skill and use it correctly for professional growth at the height of their careers. For example, statistics published in 2010 by the Goethe Institute in New Delhi showed that success in the German language proficiency test was 20 percent higher among applicants when they entered preparatory school itself.

On the other hand, another lobby advocating for teaching new languages at the high school level says that the introduction of new activities increases the burden on young children who take time to adjust to the new school environment. Hence, they keep learning new things at a level where they are fully accustomed to their original curriculum, which usually happens by the time they are in high school.

In conclusion, in my opinion, learning a foreign language is a need for an hour, which, if started at an early age, will be more fruitful, given the commendable learning abilities of young people and the extra time it takes to achieve excellence in this. However, this can create an additional workload for newcomers, which is acceptable due to the huge future benefits.
